The state park across the street from us has spectacular views and beautifully maintained hiking trails, but their forest management philosophy is to leave dead trees in place. This is great for the health of the forest's ecosystem, as the fallen trees provide a habitat for mammals and insects (including pollinators), and also add nutrients back to the soil. I've grown to really love the look of all the fallen trees alongside the trails, and their strong geometric shapes. This piece focuses on the trunks and limbs of a pair of dead trees, one still standing (called a snag) and one fallen (a deadwood), set off against the vibrant yellows of autumn foliage.
