About

Marcia Crumley is a Maine-based encaustic and mixed media artist who creates joyful, contemporary landscape paintings that are full of rich color and texture.

In these anxious times, it’s important to seek out and celebrate moments of joy. My paintings capture the delight and wonder found in simple, often unexpected, places. My art celebrates those times when the beauty of the natural world suddenly stops you in your tracks: Being mesmerized by a starry night sky, noticing how the brilliant oranges and golds of autumn foliage pop against the deep blue sky, or watching a kaleidoscope of monarch butterflies as they pass through on their annual migration. My paintings serve as an antidote to all the chaos in the world, a calming pause.

I feel blessed to live in Maine, surrounded by beauty and endless inspiration. I spend hours outdoors every day, observing the natural world closely. My calling as an artist is to do what the poet Mary Oliver once advised: “Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.” Beyond serving as artistic inspiration, my time in nature is uplifting and therapeutic, and I want my Maine-inspired landscapes to bring viewers that same sense of serenity and delight.

My collectors love the joy and calm that my paintings radiate. I often get thank-you emails like this: “Looking at your paintings every day makes us so happy.” One simple sentence like that makes all the long hours in the studio worth it!

My art has been written about in The Boston Globe, Art New England (including a 2025 cover feature!), Maine Home + Design, Boston.com, Tourist & Town, and other publications. I was named one of “five standout artists to keep your eye on” by Maine Home + Design and one of Maine’s “most collectible artists” by Art Maine. My art is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Encaustic Art in Santa Fe, NM.

Let’s start a conversation.

Whether you’re considering adding a piece to your collection, commissioning new work, or simply have a question, please get in touch. I’m happy to discuss available works, shipping, or anything else that helps you make an informed decision.

Encaustic Art Process

My work in encaustic (melted, pigmented beeswax and resin) enables me to incorporate significant depth and texture into my work. Each piece contains up to 15-20 strata of pigmented wax. I love the meditative processes of watching the wax melt, slowly building up layer upon layer of paint, fusing the layers with a blowtorch, and then carving into and scraping away the wax.

I use pottery tools to create texture and patterns in my paintings, bringing me back full circle to my childhood love of throwing pottery on a wheel. Every layer, every mark, every imperfection tells a story. The richly-textured surfaces invite the viewer to look closely and spend a little time with the piece, hopefully providing them with the same sense of calm that creating the art provided me.

Studio Visits

I love chatting about my painting process and inspiration, and the story behind each of my paintings. I am usually at my SoWa Boston studio for Open Studios on the First Friday of every month, from 5-9 PM.

I’m also happy to set up a private studio visit; both my SoWa Boston and Portland, Maine area studios are open by appointment. Message me to arrange a visit!
