About

I feel so lucky to live in Maine. I never tire of its fast-moving weather, and I love watching the clouds and light dance across the water, sky, mountains, and woods. After spending summers in Maine for over 30 years, I moved here full-time in 2018. Daily walks along the coast and through the nearby state park fuel my creativity (and helped boost my spirits during the pandemic). I also took up gardening for the first time in my life, and while I’m not very good at it yet, my pollinator-friendly flowers are a new subject matter for my painting.

My primary painting media are acrylic on canvas and encaustic on panel. In both media I focus on layers and texture, typically beginning with an underpainting in a saturated monotone such as magenta or violet. The underpainting creates a dynamic color contrast to the foliage, trees, or water, adding a sense of movement to my paintings.

My art has been written about in The Boston Globe, Art New England, Cultural Adventures2021, and Maine Home + Design.I was named one of “five standout artists to keep your eye on” by Maine Home + Design in September of 2017 and one of Maine’s “most collectible artists” in Art Maine’s 2019 annual art guide. My art is in homes across the U.S.and Canada, as well as in Europe, Australia and Saudi Arabia, and is also in several corporate art collections, including Boston Children’s Hospital, East Boston CommunityHealth Center, and American Tower Corporation.

Art Process Video: Encaustics

My landscapes have always been celebrations of color, and my work in encaustic paint has enabled me to incorporate even more depth and texture into my work. I love the meditative processes of waiting for the wax to melt, slowly building up layer upon layer of paint, fusing the layers with a blowtorch, and then carving into and scraping away differing layers.

Encaustic is a very tactile medium, and I use pottery tools to create texture and patterns in my paintings, bringing me back full circle to my favorite childhood pastime of throwing pottery on a wheel.
